Clinical Studies on Tetanus

Abstract
|
|
|
Tetanus is a neuromuscular disorder which is caused by a specific exotoxin of the infectious agent, Clostridium tetani. Clinical study is made 16 cases of tetanus patients except tetanus neonatorum from Oct. 1958 to Aug. 1968.
The results obtained are as follows:
1. The most frequent age group was from 2 years up to nine years of age.
2. The sex distribution assumed a ratio of 1.7:1, with 10 males and 6 females.
3. The patients were randomely classified into various treatment group-namely, group 1 (less than 50,000 units of antitoxin), group 2 (60,000-100,000 units of antitoxin), group 3 (110,000-150,000 units of antitoxin), and group 4 (160,000 units of antitoxin). The relationships between the amounts of given antitoxin and survival-rate were no significant.
4. The most common complication was pneumonia. Among 16 cases, 4 cases developed the pneumonia during treatment.
5. Mortality in all cases was 2cases (12.5%).
